Superbly written with great clarity, its strong points are the detail and care with which it spells out how economic factors are woven into American foreign policy and national security strategies. It is only recently published, but it presents revised versions of essays that sometimes date back a decade or more. I’m very much looking forward to the next book in the series, The Collectors, to be published in the end of August. It stands up to the comparisons I’ve seen placing it somewhere between Goosebumps and Stranger Things – good company to keep. There were some genuinely creepy moments – not just for a YA book but for anyone – that really had me on the edge of my seat and kept me flipping pages until the very end. I loved the setting – that “evil lurks in a small town” vibe. They were both fully fleshed out, multi-dimensional characters that enjoyed reading about. I loved both kids, Quinn and Mike, they were smart and kind and good friends to each other, even when they disagreed. The main character, Quinn, recently lost her dad, and I thought the author did a good job of balancing her emotional trauma with the mystery she’s working to solve and the horror that exists in her quiet suburban neighborhood. It was great fun, but it was dark and pretty scary. He was right – I loved it (thanks bookeyman!). I read this book because won’t STFU about it. Will they solve the mystery or become part of the town’s sinister secrets themselves? The closer they get to the truth, the more the Oldies push back and try to throw them off their trail. The clues lead them to discover some creepy town history. Are they vampires? Getting experimental surgeries? Is Quinn’s imagination running away from her? Quinn and Mike decide they must mount an investigation and get to the bottom of things. They make big donations to the major organizations in town, so all the adults stick up for them. Prompting the kids to nickname them “The Oldies.” And they act really strangely. They’ve lived on Goodie Lane for as long as anyone can remember, but they never seem to age, ever. She and her neighbor Mike sense that there’s something weird about their neighbors. Something strange is happening on Goodie Lane, the quiet little street where thirteen-year-old Quinn Parker lives.
